Why
Taking stock of available fonts and how well they perform
- statistics, properties for them, no of glyphs , OT rules supported
- classify them - style, weight, features
- Test at all point sizes, with Devanagari text, with mixed text (Devanagari+English+digits)
- Have sample texts for testing
- Plain text
- OpenOffice documents
- Web page, with tables and other elements.
In general identify rendering issues occurring for Devanagari fonts and rendering in FOSS apps.
- Devanagari rendering issues in Pango, Harfbuzz, QT, Firefox, Open Office
- Language issues
- Specific issues with any fonts.
MS OTF specifications have changed for Devanagari
- Understand the differences wrt old specification
- See impact wrt FOSS fonts
- Should we meet the specification or at least keep all FOSS fonts to standard scheme.
When & where
Sometime in September, probably on a Saturday in Pune. Half day (10am-2pm) or full day session (10am-6pm).
